Joint techniques

Used by osteopaths to address tension, stiffness & support recovery from injury. Various levels of intensity mean that there is a version of joint treatment suitable for all.

Traction

Traction is a very pleasant and gentle form of treatment where we draw apart two surfaces of a joint to allow fluid to bathe the joint surfaces which aids lubrication, it is also very beneficial for nerve entrapment.

Mobilisation

Mobilisation of the joints and the soft tissues around them is very beneficial for stiffened joints and arthritic conditions which cause a reduction in joint mobility. It involves the patient relaxing and the osteopath physically moving the patients limbs or spine to achieve a greater range of movement than when he started.

Manipulation

Osteopaths are known for using these techniques to help to improve the movement in, and the tissues around, stiff or dysfunctional joints. They isolate a particular joint through a careful arrangement of the body, then they put a quick, precise movement though the area. This technique sometimes produces an audible ‘click’ known as a cavitation.

These techniques are only used when appropriate but can help to make changes in the body quite quickly.

The risk associated with this technique is very low, however due to the quick movement involved, it is not suitable for children, patients on certain medications (eg. blood thinners), patients with certain medical conditions or with risk of fracture (ie. people with osteoporosis).

Acupuncture

Tristan can incorporate dry needling into his treatments when, in discussion with you, it is deemed beneficial & your consent is given.

Acupuncture is becoming more and more regularly used in UK medicine. It involves the inserting of very fine needles into the body, often without pain, but can cause a very short term sensation of pain to some. I use medical dry needling which is different to Chinese acupuncture which works along meridian lines. Dry needling focuses on the specific structures felt to be causing the symptoms, placing a needle to the required depth to affect that structure. All the needles Tristan uses are single use sterile needles and are perfectly safe.
